"This is a review of the recent revised and expanded edition of the author’s volume of non-fiction."
— Paul Campbell (Opening sentence of a thirteen line review of Ramsey Campbell, Probably on Amazon, 13 July 2018)
"This book is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to actual events or locales or persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental."

"I am not a fictional character. Books of mine referred to in Ramsey Campbell, Probably, except my novel (Carmel), are all works of non-fiction. They are quoted at considerable length, and, in the case of my most popular book (both editions), employed to bolster sales of Campbell's collection of essays, which invariably, when advertised or promoted, make much of the fact that I and the Highgate Vampire case are given coverage inside. This exploitation is nothing new. I have had it happen many times prior, not least with David Farrant's self-published booklet in 1991 where lengthy crucial passages are reproduced without consent, along with infringed images. At least there are no pictures in Campbell's latest effort. My gripe, if I am to have one, is that, as with his previous jibes at my expense, he gets so much wrong, and, of course, as with anything so greatly taken out of context, misrepresents. Finally, I find it shocking that Campbell would stoop to utilising an individual who stalks me and mine on the internet, and another who admires and assists a Lucifer-worshipping miscreant who was sentenced to a significant term of imprisonment for tomb desecration and making black magic threats. Such are the creatures to whom he expresses his gratitude in print. These two dysfunctional people have never met me, or erstwhile had a conversation with me in any shape or form. Both, unsurprisingly, are longstanding Facebook friends of Ramsey Campbell."
